This exquisite piece portrays a pregnant woman carrying an antlope in a burden basket. The art of the Mimbres people may well have been the best of the prehistoric Southwestern United States, both in conceptualization and execution. The pottery is minimal but the painting is outrageous and through narrative pieces such as this we can glimpse a moment in their lives. This pot was surface-fired hot enough to warp, hence the two width dimensions given above.
