The year 2002 was the driest on record for the 4 Corners region. As a result, lakes and reservoirs were at their all-time lowest levels revealing enormous amounts of lake bottoms. On the North end of Lake Navajo, the San Juan River releases fine alluvial clays and after 40 years of deposition some layers are now as thick as 2 feet. I gathered this clay and later cleaned and tempered it.

I handbuild each of these "jars from all over," which are inspired by classic global forms. The pieces are embellished with details and slip accents, burnished (forever), and pit-fired using Piñon Pine killed by the same drought of 2002. Just for fun, by combining ancient Japanese Raku firing technology with Anasazi inspired painted patterns and corrugation, I have created this exclusive, unique blend that is "Saziku."
